instead, i found myself in the office sorting out items and dealing with ridiculousness. it's not exactly the day i had imagined. but well, whatcha gonna do?

in other news, both harry potter lego and fat princess pirates and ninjas came out today. nerds.

drinking in the rainy afternoon

this morning randall and i braved the super raintown to meet alisha, nick, and their pals nikki and todd for a bit of brunch at the tipsy pig. we were headed to the sf vintners market afterwards and felt we should put a good base down first. the food was pretty delicious (bonus points for their thyme and cheddar biscuits with spicy honey and excellent bloody mary), but now i want to try their dinner to see if it's really top 100 worthy.

as an aside, the wine event was pretty fun. twenty bucks got us in and had us tasting all the wines we wanted (except for the fancy reserve ones in the back, you had to pay more to go there). the rainy weather seemed to lend itself to bigger reds, but we fought back and pretended it was rosé weather instead. my personal favorite was a smoky rosé that seemed to taste like a pepperjack cheese. seriously.

ps. this is my soggy wet too much wine face.

don't set the church on fire

tonight was night two of nert training. the main focus of today's class was how to shut off all your utilities (don't turn the gas back on once it's off folks!), how to deal with hazardous materials, and how to put out small fires (and when to know when it's small). we also watched them set things on fire in the church (where the class happens to be held in).

the class is pretty interesting so far, and i'd recommend it if you're interested in this sort of thing (aka paranoid like myself). the only downfall is that the class is from 6:30-9:30, which means dinner is late on tuesdays. tonight we ended up going to pomelo. we chose it because it's open til 10, and isn't too far from the class. it was also really delicious. you know how i know it was delicious? randall ate the tofu. that's how delicious it was.

a few months ago my pal scottel and i started a dueling photo blog based on vocabulary words. the concept is simple, we take the vocab words of the day, and we take pictures of them. this week is a bit challenging in that the words are actually names. this is an outtake of what i'm posting tomorrow. if you want to know the word, you'll just have to check it out in the morning.

ps. if you missed it, the improv video i tried to upload yesterday, fear not, the technical glitch was corrected and you can now watch and mock all you want.

dramz, or almost breaking the cardinal work rule.

rule number one, don't cry at work (especially if it's work related, but keep tears away even if it's not work related). rule number two, don't break rule number one.

there are some other personal work rules after that one, but this one my number one. crying at work is for suckers. don't cry at work. it's not very becoming and it makes you look weak. (there are a few exceptions, say a death of a loved one, but they are rare cases).

outside of work, cry all you want. i don't care. bawl in your beer or your cereal. i do. we all do. those that don't are heartless. people who say they never cry weird me out. that's not human.

i feel pretty strongly about these things. go ahead and cry in public, just not at work, or right outside of work either. the workplace is weird. it's best to leave your tears on the commute.

so as you can imagine, it sort of took me by surprise when i nearly lost it today. eyes closed deep breath practically meditating internal cursing and mentally throwing things at a wall was all i could to do control it.

is everyone's family so full of dramz?

sticks and stones may break my bones but words with friends will never hurt me.

thanks to dk and lizzy, i am hooked on the app words with friends. if you haven't heard about it, you should fix that problem. essentially it's a version of scrabble that you can play with other people over the course of time (editor's note: that last part was added because lwisne is a smart ass). the best part is that you can have multiple games at once. it's nice because you don't have to play until you're ready to.

so, i guess what i'm saying is, download the app and let's play. my username is pocketpig.

an impromptu party, dinner date, and karaoke outing

this is le chuck. he and i spent the morning chatting about all sorts of things, and then spent the afternoon making crackers and red pepper/walnut spread. it was delicious, i didn't think we'd eat it all, but who am i kidding, we pigged it. every last cracker crumb.

afterwards i spent the early evening nerding it with randall. we hit up some lego video game action, and then we met up with jacek, mimi, mimi's sister and her fiance for some absolute delicious nopalito dining. folks, if you are a carnivore, i highly recommend going to nopalito. it is so tasty -- everything i ate was lipsmacking -- and bonus they have parking and will call you when your table is ready (and you can call ahead to put your name on the list). did i mention they actually have parking??

on our way home from the restaurant i got a text from le chuck. he, britches, blair and the visiting j are headed to encore for karaoke. and well folks, we all know i can't turn down an opportunity for some karaoke. it's a shame though, they don't have my song there. i'm sure i'll find something though. oh, and if you're reading this now (saturday night 10pm pt), head on down, we'll duet, okay?

light as a feather (plus the year in cities)

as i've mentioned before, i am in serious need of a haircut. this is mostly because i am over using the flat iron each day. for a while i thought i'd grow my bangs out, as you can see they've got a mind of their own. This ladies and gentlemen is what they're doing on their own. that's right they flip out all farrah fawcett style -- it's a shame it's not kate jackson (she's who i was named after). anyways, they're going soon, so i had to share while i had the chance.

now for the more interesting part of this post. each year my pal lydia (who okay was inspired by kottke) lists out her year in cities. i followed their example for 2008, and here's my list for last year.

i recently started volunteering at 826 valencia as an "editor" for the bayfarer (their newspaper). I put editor in quotes because all adult volunteers are "editors" and all the kids in the workshop are "reporters" - i'm not really editing as much as i am lending a hand and nudging kids in the right direction. this was my first issue and i think it's going to end up being a lot of fun. however, despite all the fun, there is one thing that is going to be difficult: my mouth.

in case you didn't know, and if we're pals you probably do, i have a pretty awful sailor mouth. i am particularly fond of the f-word, but have been known to shit all over everything too. i don't like seeing it in the written word (with writing, you have the ability to edit yourself), but in speech things just slip out. so now, every wednesday from 6-8, i need to make sure i keep my cool and don't go all sailor on them. (oh and yes, randall actually does say "okay sailor" to me on a regular basis).

shit, this is going to be hard.

breaking up with my boyfriend

i spent a good chunk of the day cleaning out my closet. it was an ill-advised idea, especially considering it was a million degrees in my bedroom. however, it's something i'd been putting off for months and set aside today to do, so i did it.

hidden amongst all the clothes i no longer wear was this fella. many years ago randall and i didn't live in the same town, and as a joke (we have a rule that if we're going to do valentine's day gifts they have to be jokey ones), he bought me a boyfriend arm pillow to keep me company. and while it looks dumb and is pretty dumb, it's actually a really cosy pillow. however now that randall's here everynight there's no room for the boyfriend. also, i'm a married lady these days and keeping a boyfriend is pretty uncool. so after one last cosy night together, me and the boyfriend are breaking up. i'm kicking him to the curb. literally. goodwill will be picking him up sooner than later.
