Hot in the pot

I woke up this morning to a ringing telephone; it was morm calling for
no reason. We talked for nearly four hours. Afterwards it was time for
some open houses (one pretty good but not a wow), then back home to
talk to my dad. And then it was time for hot pot. We owed samshrew and
chris a dinner and chris wanted to cash in with hot pot. All you can
eat and drink for $29.99, nom nom nom.

Ps. Chris ate so much he's going to be ill all over samshrew. See?

Field trip and lipgloss!

This afternoon dk, Melissa, and I headed down to menro park for a
social media seminar marketing meeting speech listening mingling
thing. It was somewhat informative but also made me glad to hear that
we're on the right path. It was great to hang out with these ladies
and it makes me so sad that the only way we can do it is if we have to
go to a work thing.

In other news I let a stranger do my lip makeup on the street today.
They looked official and gave me samples and coupons for my fave
lipsgloss, so I couldn't really just walk in by.

Ps. I almost forgot to post today because as soon as I came home I
started emailing and working for a few hours to catch up for leaving
work early. Sux.

It's as if we never existed

I thought I might have gotten out of work early today -- we're ripping
out our cubes and everything had to be gone by 4pm -- but that wasn't
the case. Instead of packing up and heading out, we packed up and
moved into a conference room. A bunch of us even stayed late. Yes,
late on a Friday, with no desks even.

One of these people was chris. He doesn't really work at sugar, but we
were in a pinch and needed a person with final cut skills, and he
happily agreed to halp us out (I'm sure the paycheck associated with
it probably helped). It was definitely dinner time when we left, so we
called up
Samshrew and told her to hustle (she was also at work late). Then we
called up Randall and told him to pick a place for good eats. He chose
rumblefish. None of us had ever been, but it was tasty. We sort of
ordered a lot of food, but whatcha gonna do?

Ps. This funny drawing was posted on their door. I <3 it especially
mr. cook and mrs. baker!

Meet Kellan, she's the newest member of our marketing team. This is
her first week and to welcome her, dk arranged a happy hour outing. I
almost missed it (I worked late, it was a zoo today), but caught the
gang just as they were leaving metropol and heading to the irish bank.
I was on accidental cake diet today, so naturally, I washed it all
down with a bloody mary, because you know, that's totally reasonable.

Welcome aboard kellan!

Ps. Happy birthday to both morm and gma! It's wild, their birthdays
are on the same day.

time to get crackin'

tonight i trekked across town to meet randall, cynthia, and our special out of town guest karenlee for some delicious ppq crab. cynthia was the one that suggested ppq, and when karen mentioned it to us, both randall and i jumped at the chance. we'd never been, but reading the reviews made me think it would be a winner. and well folks, it was. they even give you bibs. also cracking tools. and did i mention it's an asian restaurant? those two things are almost never found at asian restaurants. but most importantly they gave us delicious grab (well we paid for it, but still). the crab was prepared in a way that made it taste like a mix between fried chicken and crab. and more than anything it was great to eat a good meal and catch up with good friends.

folks, it's time to get crackin'.

the big socks

this morning i woke straight up at 3:45. i couldn't for the life of me get back to bed. i read, i facebooked, i watched bad tv, and even tried to do some work. nothing. i was wide awake. i was also freezing. (the nice summer weather is apparently also on holiday today.) so i pulled out the big socks, and because i decided to waste the day, i've had them on ever since.

they're seriously the warmest thing i own. you can't really tell from the photo, but they're like a quarter inch thick of knitted cabled goodness that go up to my knees (although i usually wear them scrunched). i randomly bought them in prague during one of the coldest, oddest vacations ever. i wish i had bought more than one pair.

oh and for the record, i don't recommend waking up that early, especially on a bonus day. it just really throws your whole day off, and sort of kills the motivation. that is unless you're motivated to sit around all day playing video games, and eating slowcooked ribs. in that case go on and wake up at 3:45. it worked for me and i'm sure it could work for you too.

Starting the weekend right

After a wild work week I decided to join the gals for a bit of the
happy hour. Most of the office took off way early to soak up the sun.
I couldn't get out that early, but once my side of the office was
empty, I decided to split too (sorry development team!). To my
surprise Molly, Karli, Shannon, Lauren, and Becky were still hanging
out at metropol. So dk (who left when I did) and I joined them. It was
a nice way to start the weekend indeed.

catch a happy birthday samshrew wave

today was an action-packed, not to mention snack-packed, day full of samshrew birthday fun. first off samshrew, chris, and sushi dog picked randall and i up for a jaunt across the bay. the east bay spca is putting on these special events all summer long, and today was a free kayaking with your puppins day. randall and i sadly don't have a puppins, so we paid our dues and rented a kayak.

afterwards (and before) we gorged on tasty treats from the jack london farmer's market (the fish tacos there = awesome). and then we headed back to the city where chris picked up a cake from his pals at Sugar Beat Sweets. we got stuck in a little bit of pride traffic (fun fact, i witnessed a cop break up a fight, and then take down a dude who wouldn't cooperate -- come on, he took a swing at the cop!), but eventually ended up at samshrew & chris's house.

we had many hours to kill (dinner reservations weren't until 8), so we snacked, played a round of life -- randall won, also it's pretty different to the version i had when i was growing up -- drank wine, and ate birthday cake. for the record, it was a vegan cake, was vanilla with strawberry, and even randall -- who is skeptical of anything vegan and normally only eats chocolate cake -- asked for a full slice. translation: it was tasty.

finally, after goofing about for a while more, we hopped into the car, miraculously found parking in the castro on pride weekend, and headed to frances for dinner. folks, i made these reservations weeks (maybe months) ago. it is the hot new must-eat at place in the city and after eating there, i can totally see why. the food was delicious, the service friendly and on top of it, and they even seated us 15 minutes early. plus, they knew it was samshrew's birthday, so they brought us out the most fantastic housemade salted chocolate cookies with humphry slocombe ice cream sandwiches in the end. oh and did i mention? they serve the house wine by the ounce. they bring a small pitcher that has ounce markings on the side, and they only charge you for what you drink. simply amazing. i can't wait to go back.

The white glove treatment

This afternoon Melissa had us roll up our sleeves and get to work.
Okay we volunteered, but it's not like we would've let her do all this
on her own. You see she had 500 invites for a shopstyle japan event to
fold and then stuff into envelopes. They had to be folded precisely
(two folds for each packet) and then put into perfectly labeled
envelopes. We even got to wear white gloves so that we wouldn't smudge
and smear. Sugar sweatshop at your service!

in memoriam to our youth

This weekend the weather proved to be amazing BBQ weather, this was
good because i was headed to a couple of them today. We started off in
the east bay at jessi and chris's house. They have a pretty sweet
backyard and the east bay means at least 5 degrees more in warmth. The
crowd was a nice mix of folks, and while there were still more non-
parents than parents, quite a few babies and toddlers were in tow. I
started to feel old (how can I be somewhere where so many peers have
children?), but then someone brought jello shots and I knew everything
was okay.

After an entire afternoon of drinking in the sun, r and I headed to
the Parker brother's party. Every memorial day they do a 12 hour
(2pm-2am) backyard house party, complete with disco ball (yes
outdoors!), djs, and so much food and booze. Every year I say I'm
going to go, but never have the opportunity to make it. This year I
put all excuses behind me (including all day sun drinking) and dragged
Randall to the shindig. We didn't stay too long (see: all day sun
drinking), but we did have a good time. Plus, we got to see a bunch of
Santa Cruz folks we hadn't seen in years, and more Bridget time before
she leaves for turkey.

The party itself was the opposite of the first party. Both were loads
of fun (and can I just stop myself for a sec and tell you how great
the food at jessi and chris's was? Seriously I ate so much
deliciousness), but both made me aware of my age. On one hand I was
surrounded by babies and wondered how we ended up at this point in our
lives, and on the other I wondered how long until raging house parties
will be too much? Either way I'm going to try not and dwell and just
live in the now. Jello shots, disco balls, and all.
