Nerd friday: Pickled things and pork bellies edition

This evening I headed home from work and decided to deal with all of the veggies I bought at the farmers market yesterday. The main event was the cherry tomatoes. I had bought an entire bag of slightly underripe/firm ones just for pickling. I ended up making two jars, one spicy dill and the other aniseed salt. I've done this with cucumbers a bunch, but never with cherry tomatoes. Guess we'll have to wait a day or two to find out.

Ps. Taking the inflatable raft boat out tomorrow I hope it stays inflated.

So much joy I forgot the pics

The weather turned around right nice today, and so I took full advantage. At lunch angelica and I went over to paladar where we sat outside and soaked up the rays. Then later, after work, we met up again (yay for double Angelica day!) at the ferry building where we rendezvoused with ali at hog island. We drank a bunch of bubbly and talked about future plans. Eventually we all had to part ways, and sadly I forgot to take a picture of the gang.

Packing the universe

Ever since an ill-fated trip to Europe in 1998 (where I learned from all of my mistakes, or so I tell myself) I have always been an excellent packer. Everything goes into one carry on and one handheld purse item. And while I'm an excellent packer, I'm not so good at the planning. In fact I normally wait until the last minute to throw it all together, even doing laundry right before the flight.

On Friday night I head out for an east coast excursion (hello Boston and new York!). Some of it is for work, and some is for play (hello newly immigrated to the US cousin and her family!). And because this is a different universe now (or so bsugz tells me after being unable to wrap his head around the fact that I am a u2 fan), I decided to try this planning thing out.

Clothingwise, biz trips are different than fun trips (on a fun trip there's only like 5 outfits total whereas work feels like I should be trying harder to wear clean things). Plus this time im packing for 5 days of both. That said, I am still going to try my best to go carryon. I even figured out outfits that all go with the same shoes.

My luck I'm going to lose a shoe and all this planning will be a waste. I guess we'll have to wait and see what this new universe is like.

Ps. Nothing in this photo made the cut.

Pps. What should I do in Boston folks?

Ppps. NY kids, let's grab eats!

Farewell panda, hello pig!

Because I am like 12 years old, everything has to be a little cute and ridiculous. I've had a panda shower cap for quite a while now, but the elastic has started to go and it's getting to the point where the weird shower wet plastic smell won't go away. This means it was time to say farewell. So I tossed out the panda and said hello to a pig. I know, for someone who doesn't want to be known as the pig girl, I don't really do myself any favors.

Here goes the neighborhood

This evening Randall and I headed over to Criolla Kitchen. It's a new restaurant in the hood (where Baghdad cafe was) and just opened this weekend. The menu is a creole inspired southern-style deal with BBQ and chicken and waffles and red beans and rice. For starters, we downed an order of yam tater tots (delicious especially with sauces) and then we moved on shrimp grits and chicken and waffles. The food was tasty but not amazing. The grits had a nice texture and were loaded with shrimp, definitely a nice home flavor. The chicken and waffles were crunchy on the outside and tender on the inside, cooked perfectly but the flavor was just unmemorable. It was a solid dinner, but not spectacular. Service was nice though and I like having the option in the area, especially once they start serving brunch and stay open 24 hours. When they do start brunch I hope they do those grits with an delicious soft yolk egg right on top. That would be a pretty tasty meal and probably one worth writing home about. So here's hoping!
