Today's plan was really loose and open to suggestion. We knew we wanted breakfast, something fun outdoors, drinks, and fireworks. And luckily, casa de dicksmith doesn't mess around. We had all those things and more.
We started off with breakfast down near fancy Madison park (I think that's what it was called). A lot of places were closed but a divey place called the attic served us up some delicious bacon bloody Marys and tasty omelets. Afterwards we headed out to play some putt-putt mini golf. The course was designed without a lot of gimmicks and was quite fun. Despite my awesome hole-in-one on the notorious hard hole, derreck ended up winning by 6 points, giving team dicksmith the lead as well.
Once we had soaked up enough putter sunshine we popped by amy's friend heather's house for a BBQ. We weren't staying long (there were places to visit and shops to get to) but it was a nice vibe that reminded me of Santa Cruz party days.
Later, when it got closer to dinnertime, we walked down to the food area. We were craving burittos, but when we got there the place was closed, in fact many places were. We eventually landed at grims. We were going to order hot food, but half of their power was out and they couldn't cook. Luckily they could still make delicious drinks (a raspberry take on the Moscow mule was great) and serve us up their cheese and meat plate. It was a good snack but only made us hungry for dinner. With most choices out of rotation we walked about and eventually ended up at amy's fave Thai place. We nom'd it up and then went to the lookout for Lynchburg lemonades on the lush back patio.
When it got close to the right time, and after we finished our drinks and initiated alex into our gang, we walked a block to a seemingly good spot to watch the fireworks. We were sort of on this ledge next to a big concrete wall. We were calling it the bunker as there was a crazy scene playing out below us. Loads of wasted youth hipsters were lighting up bottle rockets and a few other more potent explosives. One of the big ones nearly hit a house (exploding a few feet from the window) and one guy exploded a bottle rocket inches from his face. Our little bunker felt pretty darn safe in comparison. However once the real show started we had to move. Our view was partially blocked by a tree and that was not acceptable at all. Luckily a few paces away gave us a stunning view.
Overall a most awesome day. Casa de dicksmith deserve kudos for their weekend planning. I only hope to pay the favor back one day!
Happy birthday America!
Ps. Because it is a small world, I also happened to run into ali, Karen and shin's friend. Go figure.
