Cinnamon and spice

After a weird day and an evening of junior reporters, I met up with Laura and Karen for dinner at Canela, a new neighborhood joint. The food was tasty, the decor was odd, but the place was great. Matt, the chef/co-owner came out and chatted with us for a while. He was so sweet and lovely and lives in the hood too. I hope the place does well!

Ps. If you go order the gazpacho and the flat bread. So great.

Pps. Remember Mad libs? Try playing them with 8 year olds. Everything is pooping and monkeys. True story.

Fancy seeing you here

This afternoon I met up with my cousin Lin shih yuan and her family. They recently moved to Poughkeepsie (from taiwan) and so I thought I should see them while on their coast. We're headed to their place tomorrow, but first it was time to play in NYC.

We started off at grand central station (where I met them), hit up times square, Rockefeller center (where we went to the top for the view and then spent a lot of time with legos, nintendo, and ice cream), Washington square (where we randomly saw the tic and Tac show), dinner with some bison burgers, and then back to the centrally tourist-located hotel. Tomorrow we're hitting up central park and a museum. Should be fun!

It's so great to see then all and to meet the kids too! I love the relationships that just fall back into place like no time has passed at all.

Turns out we didn't need to call the bomb squad afterall

Look at this lady, she just screams trouble doesn't she? More on her in a minute.

This morning I drive out to el dorado hills to attend alisha's bridal shower. It was at her aunt's stunning custom home, set along a gorgeous rolling hills landscape. The food was tasty and the guests were loverly (especially my sacto gals). It was sort of a picture perfect bridal shower. You know if you look past the part where the bride was an hour late because she got the time wrong. Hopefully that doesn't happen on day of!

Afterwards I stopped by morm's house. I was driving past her freeway stop and would have felt pretty guilty if I didn't. She was in good spirits and the conversation was really fun. I'm trying to get her to plan a trip with me, but she's even more noncommittal than I am. At some point we ended up hunting around the house for some purse she wanted to give me to give my sister. We ended up on an accidental matchbox car memory lane. That was soon followed by a different treasure box memory trip which led us to the one that caused the sheriff to arrive.

Well technically I caused the sheriff to arrive. I mean I called them.

You see amongst the teenage mutant ninja turtles and a bag of ties was a grenade. I should probably back up an mention that my dad was a military man and that I had, on more than one occasion, seen the grenade as a child. It was hidden, but I knew where it was. I recall being told it was emptied, but the problem was it looked real. And heavy. And with a pin in it. And morm started joking about pulling the pin.

Even though I was pretty sure my dad had said it was a surplus souvenir from his training days, I started going into panic mode. Especially once morm said she thought the one my dad had as souvenir looked different. I sort of didn't believe her, but now the seed of doubt had been firmly planted. And I had absolutely no intention of being that freak story you hear about on the news. So I called the sheriff and two squad cars and four officers came to hang out.

They had us evacuate the house and then took some photos to send to the bomb guy. Unsurprisingly, they couldn't tell by looking either. Oh and they told me something similar happened a few months ago and it turned out it wasn't a empty trainer like the guy thought. I had been wondering if i was overreacting (my dad who I talked to on the phone thought I was), but that fact solidified it. Especially once morm convinced herself that this wasn't the one she remembered my dad having.

After waiting in the sacto chill for an hour (thanks bugs but for the record my legs are not the all you can eat diner you believe them to be) the bomb guy finally he arrived. He was supposed to scope it out and whisk the grenade away in a bomb box. When he arrived he was wearing a tee shirt and jeans. I have to admit, I was disappointed that he didn't show up in a bomb suit. I think morm was too, but didn't want to fess up to it.

In the end it turned out to be totally safe, although they did say it had looked tampered with in a weird way. Mostly it was just a bit of wacky drama and a story to remember.

it's always a party when little b is in town.

little b (aka bridget, aka britches) moved to turkey a few months ago, but is in the states for an american thanksgiving. for today's festivities, we headed to magnolia where we partook in afternoon beers with a crew of folks who wanted to see her. april was one of those folks, she joined us at our house first, and after we caught up, we headed down to magnolia. there we met up with bridget, cor, cara, two folks i don't really know, winnie, marc, and then megan and her pal from amsterdam. it was another wild college reunionish type of event. and afterwards we wandered around the haight where we went drunk shopping. i drunken bought some new things and it was swell.

setting up the booth

the main reason i'm in new york right now is for the blogher convention. this year we're actually doing a booth. it's the first time we've ever done a booth at a convention like this, and it's been a crazy learning experiencing (like how it's a crazy racket and union dudes are an interesting bunch). we started off at 11:45am crazy excited, especially once the photo booth arrived. however, as the day tolled on and things didn't go 100% as planned (worked out in the end), we were crazy exhausted. i mean it was 8:15 when we left the hall. if you don't believe me check the before and after.

ps. melissa's not in the photos as she was too camera shy.

pps. here's a sneak peek of the booth. the photo is crappy because there was a lot of freight in the way. i'll get better ones later!

Welcome kellan! (and happy bday morm & gma!)

Meet Kellan, she's the newest member of our marketing team. This is
her first week and to welcome her, dk arranged a happy hour outing. I
almost missed it (I worked late, it was a zoo today), but caught the
gang just as they were leaving metropol and heading to the irish bank.
I was on accidental cake diet today, so naturally, I washed it all
down with a bloody mary, because you know, that's totally reasonable.

Welcome aboard kellan!

Ps. Happy birthday to both morm and gma! It's wild, their birthdays
are on the same day.

Pps. Exhausted.

Ppps. The 2 d pic is dk and the infamous eisenberg gals!

Escape from stonestown

This evening Randall had an apple genius appointment down at
stonestown mall. I hate that mall, a while back I cut my head open
there. And yet when Randall asked if I wanted to go with him I said
sure. I nearly got lost in macys this time (seriously, I could not
find my way out), but in the end I survived.
