This morning Randall and I packed up the mini and zoomed off to Sonora. Randall grew up there on top of a mountain and we were visiting his parents today. No really, people always think i joke about the mountain, but I don't. There's a random winding dirt road that you take to the top. In fact you can't even get there without a 4wheel drive car with good clearance. And when you get to the top, the property is wild and beautiful. In one direction his dad is growing a Christmas tree farm, in the other foliage goes on for "about three football fields". When Randall was growing up, there were apparently a menagerie of animals including goats, rabbits, chickens, ducks, horses, and calves. These days it's just his folks, an old dog, and some semi-feral cats. And if the fauna and foliage and lack of cell reception weren't big enough clues that we were somewhere a little different, then the guns his dad brought out were clear giveaways. And before you jump to conclusions about his dad, let me say that he was a sheriff's deputy and also in the UN police. He's still a right leaning guy that I argue with a lot, but don't judge him by his guns. That's my job.
After a tasty brunch and good conversation with his folks, Randall and i said farewell and headed to the fisher's house. Sandy was backpacking, and brad was at the craft fair, but we managed to have a nice chat with bob. Afterwards he told us to head over to twainharte to find brad. I'd never been, so we went to check out amy's hometown, and catch the tail end of the craft fair. Brad was helping his friend out and we went hunting for their booth. Sadly, although we looked into every booth we could find, we didn't find brad (although we did find a sign for "Cron Dogs"). One bag of mini fair donuts and two lemonades later we called the craft fair quits and headed back to Sonora.
If you've never been, Downtown Sonora is pretty cute. It's A little tourist town cookie cutter (you know antique shops, cooking supplies, candy store), but it's cute. We got there kind of late so most shops had already closed, however I managed to score a cool bracelet and some old fashioned candy I'd never seen before. We walked around a bit and then decided to grab a bite to eat at diamondback grill. I got the local grass fed burger (seriously the local name dropping trend is in full swing there too) and my god it was huge, tasty, but huge.
In the end, it was a fun adventure, but now it's time to say farewell.
