Today didn't go exactly as planned. Instead of going to 826 to write about Justin Bieber, I ended up staying at work late. On one hand, it sucked. On the other, it meant I didn't have to spend my evening writing about Justin Bieber. It also meant I got to avoid public transporation thanks to taxi driver randall. He also took a detour to Whole Foods where we perused mustards and bought dinner. oh yes. this is the life?

after nert cooking party

this evening, after a pretty great nert class (we got to do some "tabletop" exercises where we act out what would happen in a real life nert staging area), randall and i came home to eat some dinner. we normally plan something quick for nert nights (frozen pizza, sandwiches, etc.) but tonight we decided to make some chinese stirfry. randall took care of the chicken, while i manned the veggies. it was a tasty deliciousness, and a nice way to end the evening. also, it paired perfectly well with a new episode of lost.

A hem-ing and a ha-ing

Even though samshrew works less than two blocks away, she and I only
have lunch about once a year. Today the stars aligned and we had our
annual outing. We decided to be frugral and nixed fancy dimsum for
some hi-tea soup and rice. We devoured it all and then we topped it
off with some coffee.

While we were sitting and drinking coffee I noticed my awesome sock
and shoe combo. In case you can't tell it is a green polkadot sock
with a pink and navy plaid shoe. The best part is I hand hemmed my
pants the other day and I made them about 3/4" too short. Luckily I
lazily folded and sewed instead of cut and sewed, so I'll be able to
fix it. But still oops. Now everyone knows of my sock/shoe combo.

sometimes, when the weather is like this, life feels like a surreal movie. today, after another fruitless afternoon of househunting, randall and i headed over the golden gate for some fish. we also strolled down main street sausalito just for fun. okay, it was actually just to buy candy, but still, we strolled around. i don't get this place. folks who live there, is it weird that you live in a movie set, including all the shops no one really wants to shop at?

After a long day of baby birthday wine party (you need the wine to
deal with the all of the kids), and a fantastic housewarming (or is it
houseleaving since they found a place to buy) at jochen and tao's
place, it's finally time to let the week go and get my dance on. I
dropped Randall off at home, popped on a dancing dress and picked up
miss anneh. It's oldster night (aka leisure aka britpop dancing and
karaoke) night. I wanted to plan a birthday bash there but got too
busy. Oh well, at least I get to cut a rug!

Ps. Bonus points for blur, pulp, and new order all in the first 30.
Not the obvious ones either.

in which i scrutinize the fall collection

this evening, after what seemed like the longest week ever, i met anneh at the latin american club for a quick drink. it had to be quick because she had to pop back online for the independent spirit awards.

afterwards randall and i went to dinner at loló where we ate some delicious foods. i particularly liked the pistachio encrusted salmon, as well as the complimentary harissa sauce and bread. i also really liked the fact that we were seated immediately, even if it was because someone had canceled their reservation at the last minute.

on our way back to the car, we stopped by fabric8, a gallery/shop in the mission district. i splurged and bought a painting from husband and wife team scuba. this painting, called fall collection, is love love love. i mean, just look at this bear, and owl. they're so great, and so fashionable.

ps. one of the cutester things about loló was their check. when it came, instead of being in a small folder, they put it inside of books about dogs.

saying bye bye to a geek

this is dhatt (aka a geek) and today's his last day in the office. for me it particularly feels like the end of some sort of era. mostly because dhatt was one of the reasons i was hired. he interviewed me back in the day and we had the best conversation about food and science known to man.

i'm sad to see him go, but am excited to learn what he has up his sleeve. and mostly i'm bummed that we didn't know it was his last day (no one ever said the official farewell date). if we had known we'd have had a pinata with the most amazing candy ever. because that's what i think of when i think of dhatt. amazing. and candy. of course the candy.

trading up at 826

tonight i hustled out of work to head on over to 826. lately, i can't seem to get there on time, but that's okay. neither can the kids. and neither can kimra. she arrived a few minutes after me even (that's right, i've convinced her to join the 826 crew too!).

this evening we helped our buddies flush out their story ideas. mine is writing about justin bieber. if you're asking who that is, you obviously (a) don't have kids who watch tv, (b) are old, (c) are snobby, or (d) don't work at a celebrity media company. the weirdest part is that for some reason i actually googled justin bieber a few weeks ago. this means that i actually knew an awful lot about him, which my reporter is finding awesome.

and in case you're dying to know, here's justin bieber. i'm only including this video because the video i really wanted (the three year old who cries over justin bieber) has the embedding disabled.

ps. this is the first time i've ever heard this song. i can't believe they autotune him and also, he looks 12.

learning the blanket technique

tonight's NERT class was all about search and rescue. we learned how to identify how heavily damaged a building might be, whether or not it was searched, and how to get people out of the building if it's unsafe. one of these techniques is the blank technique. essentially, you get the blanket under them, and then lift them out to safety. but what if you can't lift them? well then you just drag.

accidentally pulling an allnighter (but hey, now you can win an iPad!)

i got approximately zero minutes of sleep last night, unless you count that teeny bit of just about to fall asleep until something wakes you up time (thanks stupid computer screen for turning on). part of the non-sleep is due to the fact that i napped yesterday and sort of ruined my schedule, but mostly it's that my brain wouldn't shut up. once i put the computer back to sleep, i myself tried to sleep but couldn't. i had a million and one things running through my mind (was the timer going to work, did i answer that email, did i like the end of the hurt locker, are we really thinking about buying a house, how come i don't know how to do word transitions on powerpoint, was i supposed to finish writing all that marketing info, how am i going to play that Q on words with friends) and decided to get up.

i figured, i might as well get some of those things done while i was wide awake, and the next thing i knew it was 4:30. being up that late was beyond stupid, so i crawled back into bed and tried to sleep. that lasted for another 30 minutes, and so i got up to answer non-urgent email. i figured that would surely bore me to sleep, but the next thing i knew, it was 5:45 and i was doing work firedrills. the crisis was averted (sorry for early morning phone calls and emails folks), but now it's 7:30 and far too late (um, early?) to go to bed.

and if you find me under my desk later, just leave me there. thanks.

ps. everytime i mention that i'm up late or early and not getting enough sleep, all my parent friends comment about hey if i had kids, this would be my everyday. i have to say, if you're trying to get me to join your club, you should really work harder on your messaging.
