Hug your local tarpit creature

Today was a pretty awesome tourist day in la. Randall and i started it
off with some urth coffee and then met the rest of the crew at royal-t
for some cosplay brunch. I was hoping to get one of kristen's bakelab
cupcakes while there, but the waitress (aka Japanese cosplay inspired
maid) said they were from a different bakery. Also I totally made a
food order fail. Everyone else had great looking food while I had what
was essentially a plate of spinachfromabag with orange sauce and four
measly pieces of duck. If you ever find yourself there do not make my
mistake and fall for the duck. It was just not worth it.

Afterwards, Sam and chris left for film festival stuff and bao, Laura,
Randall and I decided to go to the la brea tar pits because well, it
was sort of surprising that none of us had been there before. While
walking around a random dude on a bench asked us if we wanted our
portraits drawn. I immediately said no but as we started to walk away
we realized who it was. It was none other than totally random David
Liebe-Hart (you may recognize him from Tim & Eric). He talked to us
about aliens for quite some time and then about how he was laid off
from cartoon network. It was utterly weird and surreal. Laura, who had
no idea who this dude was, was particularly weirded out by the whole
thing. His caricatures, as you can tell, are pretty ridiculous. But,
if you want one for yourself it'll be $5 and he hangs out near the
lake pit waiting for the korendians to tell him more about their world
(he has loads of documents though, and he'll show you them).

Once we'd had enough of the pits, we headed on over to amoeba where
they were having a garage sale. Then farewell to bao and Laura, our
gracious LA-based hosts who we host.

Next up was a quick dip in the hotel pool and then one of the most
awesome sushi dinners I've had in a while courtesy of the folks at wa
sushi. I even got to cross off one of Jonathan gold's "99 things to
eat in la before you die" items, the BBQ eel apple pie. Now wait!
Before you get grossed out, it's a savory-ish dessert dish. It
consists of wasabi, puff pastry, BBQ eel, tempura apple slice and a
sweet sauce (similar to what unagi is served with anyway). It knocked
my socks off, and I highly recommend going and sitting at the bar and
just eating whatever the chef makes you.

Finally, after dinner we met samshrew and chris at the DGA for another
round of short films. Jp and rich (chris's crew) had great entries
(would love to see a full length version of empire corner and if wu is
dead got posted to the interweb, I think it would be a viral hit), but
the best one was works of art. A great way to end the weekend.

And with that, so ends the la weekend. Homeward bound tomorrow.

In the valley of love and betrayal and kyochon chicken

Today is the world premiere of Victor Yang, chris's short film that's
screening at the la Asian pacific film festival. This is what we came
down to la for, but it doesn't screen until 10pm (with a bunch of
other shorts in a program called in the valley of love and betrayal).

This meant we had the afternoon to kill time. I had originally planned
on eating all around town, but a giant funnel cake French toast
breakfast killed that idea. So I dragged Randall to the moca instead.
They're having a retrospective of their first 30 years, and while it
was a comprehensive look, I found it somewhat lacking/boring. Maybe
I'm just hard to please. However it wasn't a total bust, we did get
this sweet photo out of it.

Speaking of sweet photos, at the pre-movie screening party, chris
showed us how delicious kyochon chicken is. Kyochon catered the party
and we frigging went nuts. We ate so much chicken, I can barely move.
Can someone explain to me why there's not one of these in San francisco?

Okay, well movie time. That's the cast and crew in the photo below.
Break a leg! (Or whatever it is you say when a movie screens for the
first time.)

Ps. I took the first photo with my regular camera but didn't have
Internet access so I took a pic of the back of the camera. Ghettostyle.

A bunch of honey pigs

Today Randall and I hopped on a plane and headed down to LA. Chris's
film is screening at the LA Asian pacific film festival, and we
decided to come down to support. Besides we kept telling bao we were
coming to visit and a trip was long overdue.

After an afternoon of catching up, tito's tacos, and checking out
bao's place, we checked into our hotel, had a quick drink and then
went out to hunt for dinner. We didn't actually have to hunt hunter/
gatherer style, but we did cast a wide net. We originally thought we
go to sara's ham hung recommendation. But the English only menu was a
bit crazytown and Randall played the veto card. I was bummed at first,
but we went a block down to Honey Pig and my bummers went away. Honey
pig was Korean BBQ extreme complete with buzzers at the table to let
people know you need assistance. The food was pretty great, but sadly
the gimmicky pig shaped lighters they gave us at the end of the meal
was my favorite part. Honey pigs = Happy pigs!

Okay gotta go, it's time to go mingle at this really weird film
festival party.
