10 things i love and the reasons i should not.

  1. the main branch of the sf public library
come on, they had to hire someone to keep the homeless problem in check.
  2. wombats
have you seen the claws on this mofo? he will tear your face off!
  3. vintage clothing
9 times out of 10 it's made out of scratchy polyester, is unbearably warm, and totally impractical.
  4. skyr
it's expensive for yogurt, part of me probably only likes it because no one else does, and well, iceland is trying to kill us all.
  5. U2
if you're still a fan, you know exactly why they're on this list. if you're not, you've always known why.
  6. going to shows
you stand around for hours, your knees hurt, your ears ring and you end up going to bed way later than you normally would. plus 80% of the time the opener is just time spent waiting around.
  7. children's picture books
last time i checked, i was a grown ass adult. if my cheeks weren't so big, it might be downright creepy.
  8. stripes
i don't care what you say, stripes make you look wide.
  9. america's next top model
there are so many reasons i'm actually embarrassed to add this to the list.
  10. my job
when it comes down to it, everybody's working for the weekend.

music is my radar. (100 best songs of the decade list is finally complete.)

First, let me just say that I'm often accused of only liking "oddly brooding epic music," (as this picture might imply) but I think this list is going to shoot that theory down completely. Secondly, let me say the picture that is accompanying today is only because it's been a really weird day. It wasn't meant to be this sad or stark, that's just how it turned out. Thirdly, finishing this list was a really nice way to escape from everything.

And I know, these end of the decade lists are supposed to go up before the end of the decade, but what can I say? I needed an extension. Like all favorite lists, this is clearly subjective. These are my songs, my jams, and quite frankly, they're not even always THE best songs. They're just the ones that got a lot of rotation at chez sabs or are "good" for sentimental reasons.

I only let myself choose one song from an artist, so there were some tough decisions. I'm not even sure I'm going to agree with myself a few months from now let alone at the end of another decade. I'm also sure to regret a few newer songs on there, and I'll probably fall in love with a band that didn't even make the list this time around.

And finally, the numbers are just there to prove the list is at 100. The final top ten are in order, but the rest are broken down into categories in no particular order. It was just easier this way.

waking up in one time zone and falling asleep in another (happy new year!)

my memory is terrible, but for some reason i try to give it a kickstart at the end of every year and list out my top ten highlights of the year. last year was a spectacular one, but this one was a lot more lowkey. Let's see how it compares:

1 - Oh the midwest
Although my family has roots in the midwest, I'd only been out there a handful of times. This year, however, I was there three times. Once for Blogher where I met so many amazing folks and had one of the craziest nights of my life . Once to join anneh at a wedding - we also hung out with erin and josh. And then once to visit my grandma and dad and play in the snow.

2 - Happy anniversary vacation staycation
This year randall and I celebrated our first married year together by heading up to napa for tasty foods, delicious wines, bike rides and kayaks. It wasn't staying home, but it wasn't going far away either.

3 - The whole gang went to portland, randall and i went twice
Juju and Wes were visiting scottel and so randall and i jumped on the bandwagon and joined them there. Our car broke down on the way, so we went again a week later.

4 - Five words: Award Winning Mac and Cheese
Anneh came up with the recipe, i just made it look pretty. Either way we walked away with an achievement.

5 - I saw more movies this summer than I have in the last three years.
Special thanks to DK of the DK & Sabs Summer Movie Series.

6 - I became a tourist in my own town
This year I didn't go on a lot of trips out of town, but I did spend a lot of time exploring the town. From the Seward Street Slides (twice) to Alcatraz, there was a lot of fun to be had in town.

7 - I watched people butcher pigs in a hipster bar
Only in san francisco does this happen. And oddly enough, it happened more than once for me. Both times were super delicious.

8 - I got crazy sick
This is not a highlight, but I spent a good chunk of March sick so I thought it was worth mentioning. I hadn't been that sick for that long in quite some time.

9 - Scottel and I became super amateur wedding photographers
First there was stef & alex, then there was karen and shin, and finally the C+C Wedding Factory.

10 - The househusband makes me dinner
This one is a mixed bag, on one and it's a highlight and on another it's not. Randall joined the ranks of the dotcom 2.0 bubble bursty economic downturn unemployed (part of the reason it was a lowkey year) which was a lowlight. However, this gave him a lot of extra time to cook, which was a highlight in that there were many many delicious meals to partake in.

While much more lowkey than last year, this year is still difficult to sum up in just 10 bullet points. Some honorable mentions include: reuniting with a very old friend, top model photo and videoshoots, my favorite haircut in years and years, jarvis cocker shouting out to bean and stef, finally making it to the alameda antique fair, dancing at my leisure, a warm summer night walking home from dancing all the way from soma, octopus garden costume, the state reunion, a cake with a face on it, karaoke birthday, three years at sugar, all the old friends with new babies, and finally, a entire summer filled with delicious lunches.

well folks, that's my list. I hope you had a great 2009, and here's to a fantastic twenty-ten!

xo,
-sabs.
