Nerd Friday: Mouth numbing edition

This evening I headed to the mission for a bit of thrift town fun and tasty foods. At 8 I met Randall, Dave, and Sara for some mission Chinese food. Somehow this place has become the restaurant I've been to the most (if you don't count off the grid) and that's okay with me. The spices there are just so amazing and delicious. The chicken wings smothered in hot peppers and the ma pao tofu are superb and I love sharing it with people.

While we were there, a guy outside started waving at Randall. We thought it was ammon, so Randall went out to talk to him. Turns out it wasn't ammon, just someone who looks like him. He was waving at Randall because his friends thought Randall looked like an older version of this guy. I thought it was particularly funny because while Randall went outside I was telling Dave and Sara how people always think ammon and Randall are brothers.

Afterwards we parted ways and I indulged in macarons that Sara made. Overall a delicious evening.

Santa Cruz, you're not that far

This morning opened up with a wonderfully peautiful day. Randall and I had poker plans in Los altos at 5, but had the entire day to do nothing. I assumed we'd end up hanging out at home, maybe cleaning the house, maybe going out for lunch. However around 11ish, Randall suggested we take a ridiculous detour through Santa Cruz. It had been quite some time since I'd been so I said sure.

We knew we'd be out late, and somehow this go future south, then come back north thing made sense. Not sure how, but it did.

Right before noon, we were driving thru Pacifica when Randall said be wanted to grab a coffee at the train car coffeeshop. There was a train car BBQ place there too and the line was bananas. Naturally we had to stop there and eat. The place was gorilla BBQ (as seen on food network) and the pulled pork and ribs were pretty tasty. There was a cute picnic area to eat at too, so we took our time noshing on delicious meats. It was an hour detour, but I think it was worth it. Bonus, there was a super cute thrift store next door and I found a fun pair of orange button earrings.

After the noshing, we continued up highway 1, stopping along the way for some scenic view looking. I love the way this field near pigeon point looked. I also loved the way these cows were all perched on the ledge like some gang waiting for you to make the wrong move before attacking.

All the stopping and eating and traffic left us a little crunched for time. We got to Santa Cruz around 3, i drove around the chace, and then sunk my toes in the sand. We listened to Bobby Darin down west cliff, ate a Vallarta taco, picked up some pacific cookie co cookies, grabbed marini's chocolate covered bacon for heidi, used the remaining $4 chefworks gift card (thanks amy!), debated the penny ice cream line but decided to grab mariannes on the way out, and then drove past the matterhorn. It was sort of giant whirlwind, especially since we did all that in just over an hour, but the weather was perfect and the whole thing left me wanting more. The way out on highway 17 was the same too: Sucky and forcing me to say we should leave more room between cars.

Once we made it over the hill, we unsuccessfully tried to pick up some stuff at the mini dealer and then headed to grant's house. He was hosting one last poker party before they move to the compound. I was the only gal at the table, but don't let that fool you. I'm no shark, but I lost once, came in 3rd once,'and came in 2nd on the last round. That means I broke even, which is good because Randall did not. It was a fun night with good company and tasty snacks. In fact you could sum up the day that way.

Fun with tasty snacks. There should really be more days like this in life.

Ps. Santa Cruz crew, we should rent a house for a week and have a ridiculous vacation in the sc. What says you?

Nerd Friday: train to yumtown edition

For lunch, a gang of us caught the (metaphorical) train to yumtown (also known as john's snack and deli). We were there for the kimchi burritos, but sadly we first had to stop at waitsforeverville. We just arrived at the end of a lunch rush so it took a little while for the burritos to turn up. But once they did, man were we happy. Yumtown all aboard!

Then later, at 5, Brian sent out a call for happy hour. Naturally a gang of us joined him. If it isn't obvious, I <3 my company. Randall even decided to come crash our happy hour. Afterwards we were trying to figure out dinner and couldn't decide. We decided just to head back to our hood and figure it out from there. We ended up at super duper (slowly becoming our new I dunno what do you wanna do place) and while there Randall noticed that the paper actually said yumtown. Choo choo all aboard!

Ps. Randall met this dog on our way home. He always makes friends wherever he goes

Crowded rides and roving eats

Julie and I happened to leave work at the same time and so we set off for a joint muni adventure. There happened to be a train at the platform when we arrived, and by some stroke of muni luck, it was one we could ride. We squeezed on just in time, only to have a billion more people squeeze in after us. It was a packed train, but not the worst ever. And, for rides like these I'm always glad it's a friend I have to squish up with and not some sweaty stranger.

Later, once Randall came home from the RWC, we journeyed to off-the-grid. There was a wee one over in the haight and we had the most delicious stew item from 51st state. We also had some Korean tacos and sweet potato fries. Randall surprised me by eating the fries without coaxing. He acted like it was completely normal for him to do so. Folks, I think Randall may have been secretly replaced by an alien clone. I'll surely keep you posted.

Going out of the comfort radius

Yesterday Julie wanted to know if we could have our lives fulfilled soon. This means a tasty lunch somewhere and I told her heck yah. I remembered that samshrew had told me about a place called spicekit and so we made a plan. It turned out to be a good one. Kellan, Victoria, and Erin joined us on our outing and they all agreed. I had the pork buns and it was mighty nice indeed. We shall most definitely be returning. Thanks for the tip samshrew!

After lunch we came back to work (where the rest of the gang was playing settlers) and finished off the day. Reid had planned a happy hour after work, but at 5:45 he was nowhere to be found and the gang started to disperse. I was about to leave when Reid reappeared and happy hour was back on. We headed over to metropol where we ordered drinks and the cheese and appetizer plates.

I have to say, I love my coworkers, but you know maybe we've got some pigout issues? Nah, I'm sure I'm overthinking it. We don't have food issues at all. Not at all.

Exploring creativity and good eats

This evening Randall and I decided to do an impromptu date night. We started off by heading to mission Chinese food for a really great dinner (loved it even though the service was pathetic). We chowed through a lamb noodle soup, Taiwanese eggplant, mongolian beef, and spicy wings (they're buried under this plate of peppers!). It took longer than anticipated, but there was still time to head over to creativity explored. The work there (created by artists with developmental disabilities) is pretty amazing and the new show "black and white and read all over" opened tonight. I didn't find a piece for our house, but there was some very cool stuff. Afterwards we walked past summit where I grabbed a hot cocoa to warm up and then headed home. Folks, it is crisp outside, stay warm!

Potsticker party for two

This evening Tod and I had detention and stayed at work late. This
meant I didn't get home until around 8:30. Although there was a quick
stop at the grocery store to pick up potsticker skins. I made the
filling the other day but didn't have any skins. Originally I wanted
to go to the Asian grocery store to get the brand of skins I like, but
with the detention I had to settle for what was at safeway. They came
out pretty tasty anyway. I should know, I ate an entire bowl of them.
So fast, I didn't even get their pictograph.
