Lucy I'm Home!

Meet Ricardo. He's made from two gloves i got down at the Mexican dollar store. We were going to make him some friends but we got a little lazy. Ricky's been in the family for a year or so, but we only gave him his name today. I think this might be my first successful stuffed animal.

In sad, but sort of related news, looks like Craft magazine is stopping its print version. gwaaah economy!

the house on craft corner

today, while on the bart, i realized that i don't have a large project in my life at the moment. the last few years have been lots of planning and preparing - a trip or three here, a wedding there, a city move over there, and a new career move times two. the current lack of something to do is making me antsy. i feel like i should be doing something with my time. something good. only i don't know what.

so until i figure it out, i make random shit. yesterday my pals at bellasugar posted something about knitted headbands. i've been wanting to make one, and this seemed like a good excuse. so i went home, made up a pattern, and a few hours later, ta da. i made this.

Here's the prototype pattern. It needs some work. Mostly it needs fewer stitches and a better ribbing. My fat head is about 24" around, so I cast on 96 stitches of a worsted weight wool (if I do it again, i'll probably only cast on 80) on size 10.5 needles. I [knit 8, purl 8] to end for 3 rows. Then i did a stockinette stitch for 10 rows, then i did [knit 8, purl 8] for 3 rows and bound off. Then i sewed up the edges and crotched a random flower. Finally i sewed the flower over the seam to hide it. It could be better, but like i said it's a prototype.  just make sure the ribbing matches up (although i would recommend a ribbing of 4 instead of 8, i thought the 8 was too wide) and whatever you do will be fine.

ps. if you have any ideas on good things i should be doing, let me know. if not, i will keep on crafting and continue my downward spiral into oldladydom.
