this is what happens when i get bored

i have a hard time sitting around. don't get me wrong, i am really lazy, and i like doing "nothing." thing is, i always feel really guilty about it. so instead of just sitting around enjoying a movie or tv show, i feel the need to do something else. multitasking if you will. it's the main reason i picked up knitting. normally i'm pretty content to do that, but i'm in the middle of a big project that doesn't really much to the imagination (so much that i actually set it aside for about a year). so instead of knitting, i've started sewing again. only the problem is, a sewing machine is quite loud and doesn't really work as "something to do while sitting around like a lazy log." which brings me to my latest project, this necklace.

i'd seen a few things like it at anthro, urban, and etsy, and thought i could do something similar. and after i found this tutorial i had no excuses. after all, all i needed was a t-shirt and scissors, plus a needle and thread (but that was only for the rosettes). i'm pretty thrilled by it, and it came out even better than i thought it would. plus, look, so versatile! now i need some more free t-shirts so i can make more. not sure why i need more than one, but i'm kind of hooked on making these. plus they're easy peasy to put together (in theory it should take 20 minutes, in practice this one took over an hour).

sidenote: anyone else watching treme? thoughts? i'm 4 episodes in and am not sure yet. i'm liking all of the characters and their stories, but i sort of keep wondering what's going to happen.

a bit of the d.i.y.

i woke up early this morning, and before meeting anneh and jen for brunch at boogaloos, i marched on down to the hardware store to pick up a few supplies. for nearly a year i've been wanting to make an earring screen, inspired by this one on FotoFlat. It's now hanging up inside the linen/accessories/shoes/travel/art supplies closet (when you live in a house with one closet and one linen closet you get creative with your space) and i'm quite proud. for the record, i had no idea i had so many dangly earrings.

i've caught the spring cleaning bug, and am trying to get my house in order. although really, i'd just like to get a new house in order. we found one today. i think we're going to make an offer. assuming the house stays on the market more than a couple of days. *fingers crossed*

ps. i have no idea why the panda eyes are so big. i literally had just woken up from an hour long nap.

It's beginning to look a lot like Christmas (even if the weather feels otherwise)

Growing up, my family always decorated for Christmas the weekend
following thanksgiving. I haven't always kept up the tradition, but
this year it felt right. Although I'm not really sure why, it was 75
degrees here in San Francisco, not exactly holiday weather.

After a full morning of errands (and a giant carnitas torta), Randall
and I set foot in the warm sunshine and picked out a Christmas tree. I
must admit that it felt a bit disconnected to do so. We ended up going
for this lil' six feet tall guy. It fits the space well and is a good
size for just the two of us. When we mounted it to the tree stand, we
ended up having to cut off a few of the branches on the bottom.
Instead of tossing them out, I went all martha Stewart and turned the
branches into a wreath. I'd never made a wreath before so it's a bit
wild in parts. It's fun though and I'm happy with how it turned out.
