it's been an emotional day full of family, flights, and final honors. my grandma, lucille agnes eldredge, was put to rest at fort snelling national cemetery in minneapolis, minnesota. the ceremony was really quite nice. there was 7 rifles, flag bearers, flag folders, and buglers playing taps. it was really surreal in that it felt like i was standing in a movie. i burst into tears when the first round of gunshots happened. i just couldn't help it.
while there, bao kept giving me the "why the f are you taking pictures" evil eye. again, i couldn't help it. i think it's just how i deal with things. if there aren't any photos, it's like it didn't happen.
although i must admit, this was a weird place for a photo op. it wasn't my idea, but someone wanted a photo of just the family. i of course had to have one on my camera too. i was really surprised by the framing, but sort of love it. the rich wood in the bottom is actually the casket before it was put into the vault.
afterwards we said farewell to both she and my grandpa. he passed away quite some time ago, but now they're together again. the national cemetery is interesting in that one side of the headstone is for one person, the other is for their spouse. in most cases the spouse wasn't a veteran, but in this case they both were. it's not etched yet, but my aunt says they've chosen "together forever" as the inscription. just typing that makes me tear up.
