impromptu dinner party

the office today was a literal sweatshop. we're on the 15th floor and have direct sun shining on us all day. it's normally not an issue, but on hot days like today, it's misery. we all wilt and sweat and melt to our seats. because of this, i left early. at 5:15 i couldn't take it anymore and headed home. with the extra bit of time (for comparison sake, i left the office after 7 yesterday), i decided to cook dinner. i picked up a bunch of great veggies at the farmer's market and decided to roast them, puree them and turn them into a delicious soup. yes, i know, soup on a hot day is stupid. but it's so delicious and besides fresh chicken tortilla soup is really a summer soup. if the veggies aren't delicious and ripe, then the soup is bland. lucky for me, the veggies were great. and lucky for samshrew and chris, i knew there'd be extra, so i invited them over. they're our go-to meat-eater pals, and i don't feel the need to clean for them, so they luck out on the nomminess.

octoballs and vino for the win!

this evening julie had a bunch of us over for octoballs and vino. now octoballs aren't balls of octopus as much as they are round balls of batter with a surprise octopus center. they're also not really called octoballs, they're called takoyaki and they're absolutely delicious. breaded awesomeness with a delicious tidbit. plus they were super fun to make. once you make them (in the special machine), you then coat them with kewpie mayo, brown sauce, seaweed, and benito flakes.

and if this wasn't enough food, we also ended up making okonomiyaki. i've had this several times and never even realized it was like 80% cabbage.

can't wait for octoballs and vino part two!

want some rye? course ya do.

after work i trekked over to rye for leslie b's birthday. it's not that far from my work, but thankfully there was a bus, because even though my shoes were adorable (and they must be cute, because many people complimented on them today) and are flats, they are the most uncomfortable shoes ever. like two blocks tops. i have 3-inch heels i could walk further in. although, i will probably forget this and wear them again next week.

on my way there this old lady talked to me about the weather. she spent the 10 blocks on the bus talking about it. and no i didn't sit by her, she sat by me. i think there is something in my demeanor that says, "hey let's talk about the weather." don't you think?

while i was at rye, which btw i think is an excellent bar, i meant to take a photo with the birthday girl. but several hours and several drinks later, i had completely forgotten. to make up for it, here is one of her blowing out candles. make a wish!

after drinking randall and i headed over to a random thai place. there are many in the area and even though i can't remember the name of this place, we chose wisely. it was a taste. we got our food to go and made our way home. when we got there chuck and rick were having a smoke and told me that they heard me singing in the shower and thought it was fun. being that i was more or less sober at this point (first time i've been sober while talking to them in a while), i immediately blushed and was embarassed. and then i told them they better chime in next time.

ps. bonus points if you get the reference in today's title. also, you are a freaking nerd.

does this sandwich make me look phat?

i love sandwiches. i think they're quite possibly one of the best things ever invented. delicious fillings squashed between layers of warm or toasty bread. are you with me on this one? i know that my pal nancy is.

whenever i can't think of dinner plans my first reaction is to go with sandwiches. so tonight, when i couldn't think of dinner, i told randall we should have sandwiches. sadly, ike's closes early on monday. however there are many other sandwiches to try, and lucky for me randall remembered Phat Philly on 24th. i'd heard about it awhile ago, but hadn't had a chance to try it. so tonight we remedied that with pepper steaks and hoagie steaks. they were good, but not amazing, i was also hoping the cheddar beer sauce would've been more cheesy, less saucy. the bread (which they bring in from philly) was also good, but sort of too soft to hold up to the fillings. i will, however, be going back to try more. oh and also, they have bbq sauce made with mr. pibb. so they get cool points on that one.

ps. apparently i am not the only one who thinks it's funny weird that chrysler is using holy fuck in a commercial. what would the innocent folks do when they find out the song is by a band called holy fuck? do you think people could get offended out of buying a chrysler?

happy morm's day from the pig family

hanging out with morm for mother's day, and since her yard is quite nice right now, she is not forcing anyone to hammertime (her word for "go work on my backyard"). because of that, we are doing her second favorite activity: cooking and eating. i love the cooking, but i have to admit i love the eating more. today we are making a millionty green onion pancakes. i wanted to bring some dough home, but she's insisting on parcooking them first. she says it'll be easier. i am dubious, but it's morm's day so we'll do what she wants. actually who am i kidding, even when it's not morm's day we'll do what she wants.

oh and for the record this is not us showing you mouths full of chewed food. this is us shoving hot food in our mouths and going, HOT HOT HOT. she says when this happens you have to blow outwards and wave your hands. you know, instead of spitting it out, or god forbid, waiting until the food cools before you put it in your mouth to begin with.

ps. she was skeptical about me putting this picture on the internet. she was hating on me for taking pictures in the morning before she had a chance to shower and makeup. but once i told her i thought it was funny, and that you guys might think it funny too, she changed her tune. and in that sense, i am totally my mother's daughter.

pps. hey dad, hope you get over this little cold soon. if not we're going to have to get you a bubble to live in. and while that might make for a funny father's day photo, i'd be okay with something else.

feel our reign

this morning i made randall teach me a few things on the bass. we have known each other for over ten years, and yet i've never really heard him play. although he was a bit rusty he still has skillz. afterwards i took my new tricks and headed over to anneh's house where we were having lazy band practice. i say lazy because we are living up to our name (the monarchs of laze) by only praticing once every 2 months or so. however this time we invited chuckles along. he actually has a gold record, and plays the ukulele, so it should be a good.

when anneh's roomie meg got home, we decided to call it quits and all of us headed over to little star where we met up with randall (btw, he's not joining our band because he is a funhater x10). we devoured some delicious pizzas, and then hustled on home. it was brisk out and i didn't have a coats.

ps. it took forever to get our table. this was because the people who were sitting at the table did not leave after paying their bill. they sat there for at least 10 minutes even though the restaurant was packed and the wait time ridiculous. why do people do things like this?

somedays i love being a grown up

today i asked randall how he felt about ice cream for dinner. suprisingly he said, "sure." so after work, i ran a couple of errands and then stopped by humphry slocombe where i grabbed a couple of pints. the first one was blue bottle vietnamese coffee and secret breakfast (which is bourbon and cornflakes), and the other was prosciutto (which is salty and fatty, and tastes like something from my childhood that i can't figure out). i really wanted the thai chili lime, but they didn't have any in pints.

now for the shocker. bi-rite i love you dearly, but there is a new lovely on the block. if you have not been to humphry, you are missing out. every flavor i've had has been pretty amazing. humphry i heart you.

ps. yes, i am reading a comic book in the pic above. that's right you're jealous, i'm eating ice cream for dinner while i read comics. sometimes being an adult is awesome.

pps. for dessert sushi and samshrew came over and we had porkchops, mac & cheese, and beet salad.

ppps. samshrew says the prosciutto ice cream tastes like "asian grocery store" i think she's on to something.

bowled over

after work i stopped by laura's for a bang trim. they had gotten really long, and now they're back to their usual bowl roundness. they're crazy blunt, and maybe too much like a little kid, but i heart thems, and they're exactly what i wanted (if you need a haircutter in san francisco, do go see laura at barnets, she's fantastic!).

when my bowl cut was done, i stopped by burger's place. she's been sick like the rest of us, and today was her first real day of health. we chatted for a bits, and then headed out to meet randall for a delicious dinner. he was a grumpy bear beforehand, but some foods and a suita puppylove did the trick.

ps. bonus points for anyone who can tell me where we ate dinner.

does this look like a reject?

this morning a little wrapped cookie on a stick was waiting for me on my desk. i didn't know who it was from, but when i found out i felt like a fool. of course it was from angelica. she is the queen of cute things and thoughtful gifts.

she is also the queen of letting you know of a good bargain. so it should come as no surprise that as soon as i told her thanks, she told me that it was one of the "rejects." you know, no offense. not that i would have taken any. besides it tasted great, i didn't get a hint of reject at all.

ps. thanks for the dinner samshrew!

soup soup soup and a stack of soda crackers

this evening - after stopping to pick up that pesky stick of butter - randall and i whipped up a vat of tomato orange soup. we didn't strain it through cheesecloth, so it looks a bit chunky (after seeing the picture, randall says it looks like baby food, or maybe he said baby barf?), but let me tell you it was downright delicious. don't let the orange scare you either, it's a really nice touch. oh and there weren't any soda crackers involved, that's actually a lyric from a song i used to love in college.

ps. my camera came back all clean, so naturally the first thing i did was pick it up with soup hands. go team.

pps. i have to wait two weeks for a new lost?! whaat?
