for the record

back when i was in college, vinyl was my music format of choice. not because it sounds cooler, or better (my turntable was a pretty crappy hand-me down), but because it was cheap. even used, a cd would cost at least 5-12 bucks, but with records, it was all pretty much 99 cents to 5 dollars. and i know for a fact some of these were closer to 25 cents (best of henry mancini anyone?).

sadly, i no longer have a functioning turntable, and so 6 cubbies full of records seemed like a total waste of space (especially since a lot of these were strictly bought for the coverart). so today i decided to do a cull (besides, i've got the stuff i still listen to converted to mp3s already). i've now got the collection (which includes randall's vinyl) down to 4 cubbies. now i have to come up with some ridiculous project, or better yet, haul them down to goodwill (where you know, the majority of these came from anyway). either way they have to go. because, for the record, i'm no hoarder.

speaking of which, i read a great article in mother jones about hoarding, and how we as a society are getting obsessed with them (which i find hysterical, obsessing over people who obsess over things). but it's true you know. i am totally guilty, it's like a car wreck in which i just can't turn away. i'd say it's damaging and awful to watch (the opposite of all the super clean house shows from the last decade), but everytime i get sucked in, i end up throwing out an entire bag of trash and feel the need to clean something. (case in point, these records.) so i guess it can't be all bad.
