tough on the outside, big softy on the inside

a few weeks ago anneh and i were talking books (i'm back on the reading wagon), and she recommend that i check out oscar wao. so i immediately added it to my library queue (i heart that i can order stuff online and they email me when it's ready to pick up via self checkout). the book is a pretty great read, the narrator really pulls the story together, but it wasn't what i was expecting. it was however a bit sad in the end (oh come on, i'm not ruining anything. the book is called "the brief wonderous life of oscar wao" what part of "brief" doesn't spoil the ending?), and since i am a big ol' softy inside, i shed a few tears. i didn't bawl outloud or need a box of tissues or anything, but my face did curl up unattractively, a few tears rolled down my cheeks, and my panda eyes got all huge. not so tough really.

ps. what should i read next?

Yay! Glad you finished and liked it. Sorry to help make you cry. (I did need the tissues, but in other news, the sky is blue.) I love all of the cultural references in that book, from the title down to pop songs. It feels like something to re-read in 10 years, when I am smarter. God, Oscar. I kept wanting to run to him and yell NO NO NO DON'T DO IT. The things the unloved do in the quest for love (except, of course, Oscar was loved, just not in the way he wanted to be).

I have Blindness here if you'd like to borrow that. The Lovely Bones is good. Keep wanting to read that Wilma Muffintop book or whatever it's called -- think it got th ePulitzer? — but it's a collection of short stories.

Oh and I have the Dragon Tattoo book, but I found the writing shoddy and the characters one-dimensional and the violence gratuitous and misogynist. But if you want to read it, it's here and smells like Belize.

Stiff, the curious life of human cadavers. For such a serious subject, the book is quite hilarious. She has a funny, but respectful (and curious) approach on the subject.
